Phase 1 Orthodontics: Early Care

July 30, 2026

A child's smile is constantly growing and changing. The early years provide a unique opportunity to guide jaw development, correct developing bite problems, and create the foundation for a healthy, confident smile. This is the goal of Phase I Orthodontic Treatment.

Phase I treatment is carried out while a child still has a combination of baby and permanent teeth, typically between 6 and 10 years of age. Rather than simply straightening teeth, interceptive orthodontics focuses on identifying and correcting developing problems before they become more complex.

Why Choose Early Orthodontic Treatment?

Early intervention can:

* Guide proper jaw growth and facial development.

* Correct crossbites, underbites, and developing bite problems.

* Create space for erupting permanent teeth.

* Reduce severe crowding and minimize the need for future extractions.

* Correct harmful oral habits such as thumb sucking and tongue thrusting.

* Reduce the risk of injury to protruding front teeth.

* Improve chewing, speech, and overall oral function.

* Simplify and shorten future orthodontic treatment.

When Should My Child Be Evaluated?

The ideal time for a child's first orthodontic evaluation is around 7 years of age. At this stage, enough permanent teeth have erupted for potential problems to be identified while significant jaw growth still remains. Early assessment does not always mean immediate treatment—it allows us to monitor your child's growth and intervene only when the timing is most beneficial.

Signs Your Child May Benefit from Phase I Orthodontics

* Your child may benefit from an orthodontic evaluation if they have:

* Crowded or overlapping teeth

* Crossbite, underbite, or open bite

* Protruding front teeth

* Early or delayed loss of baby teeth

* Difficulty chewing or biting

* Mouth breathing

* Thumb sucking or tongue thrusting habits

* Noticeable jaw asymmetry or shifting while biting
